# Can You Apply Epoxy Over Hardwood Floors?

Yes, you can apply epoxy over hardwood floors, but should be installed carefully and professionally. Wood expands, contracts, flexes and responds to changes in moisture, while cured epoxy is solid. This makes coating hardwood much more difficult than coating a [properly prepared concrete floor](https://elitefloorcoating.com/blog/epoxy-flooring-prep-best-practices) and increases the risk of cracking, peeling and premature damage when the installation is not done correctly.

Luckily, we have installed epoxy several times over wood floors and have had success, but not before some failures, so we want to share our experience with you before you waste time and money trying to coat a wood floor.

## Why Epoxy Over Hardwood Is Different

Epoxy coatings are commonly installed over concrete because concrete provides a stable, rigid surface that allows the coating to bond securely. Hardwood is a completely different substrate.

Wood naturally moves as temperature and humidity change. The individual boards can expand and contract, and the entire floor can experience slight movement or flexing under weight. When an epoxy coating is bonded to a less stable surface, that movement places stress on the coating and the bond underneath it.

This does not automatically mean epoxy cannot be installed over wood. It means the floor has to be evaluated and prepared differently than concrete.

## Challenges with Epoxy Coating Wood Floors

As we've already emphasized, one of the biggest concerns with coating over hardwood is the movement. However, moisture levels, humidity, prior coatings or finishes, and gaps in boards all make coating wood a bit trickier.

### Moisture and Humidity

Moisture not only causes wood to warp and move, but in order for epoxy to properly bond, the moisture level of the wood needs to be tested.

Applying an impermeable coating over wood that contains excessive moisture can lead to adhesion problems, bubbling or other coating failures. Professional installers know how to evaluate the substrate before applying the coating rather than simply assuming the floor is ready.

### Existing Finishes Must Be Removed

Most hardwood floors already have some type of finish, such as polyurethane, varnish, wax or another protective coating. Epoxy needs a properly prepared surface to bond effectively.

Simply cleaning the floor and rolling epoxy over the existing finish is not enough. The existing coating generally needs to be removed or mechanically prepared so the new coating has an appropriate surface to bond to. Professional resinous flooring guidance also emphasizes that wood substrates need to be free of waxes, varnishes and other contaminants before coating.

### Gaps, Seams and Damaged Boards

Hardwood floors are rarely one perfectly continuous surface. Boards have seams, gaps and sometimes areas of movement or damage.

Those imperfections need to be addressed before applying epoxy. Otherwise, movement and imperfections underneath the coating can eventually show through the finished floor or create areas where the coating begins to fail.

## Does Type of Wood Make a Difference?

Not necessarily. The condition of the existing floor matters just as much as the type of wood.

Before recommending an epoxy coating, a professional should evaluate:

- The condition and stability of the hardwood
- Existing finishes and contaminants
- Moisture levels
- Gaps between boards
- Areas of flexing or movement
- Previous water damage
- The type of coating and primer being considered

In some cases, the existing wood floor may need additional preparation or an appropriate plywood substrate before a resinous coating is installed. Industry guidance for resinous flooring over existing wood floors, for example, calls for securing the existing floor and adding properly specified exterior-grade plywood when necessary to create a suitable substrate.

### Installing Epoxy Over Plywood

Thicker, more durable (especially exterior-grade plywood) is generally easier to install epoxy over. However, the plywood still needs to be properly prepared first. The surface should be structurally sound, securely fastened, clean and free of coatings or contaminants that could interfere with adhesion. Any movement between sheets or damaged areas should also be addressed before coating.

Because plywood still flexes and responds to moisture, the preparation and coating products need to be selected specifically for a wood substrate. A professional installer may use a compatible primer and additional reinforcement or moisture protection before applying the epoxy. Skipping these steps increases the risk of cracking, peeling and premature chipping.

For the best results, use new plywood, and have it evaluated before applying epoxy rather than treating it like a concrete floor.

## Should You DIY Epoxy Over Hardwood?

If you want an epoxy floor that is going to last more than a year or two, doing it yourself is probably not the best option. Most homeowners do not have the equipment to properly prepare the floor, nor test the moisture levels to make sure it is safe to install the epoxy.

On top of that, [store bought DIY floor paints](https://elitefloorcoating.com/blog/garage-floor-paint-vs-professional-epoxy) are not the same quality as professional coatings. In our case, we are installing several layers, and the finished coating will be much thicker and more protective than the thinner epoxies you can buy at big box retailers.

While DIY epoxy kits make coating a concrete garage floor look relatively simple, hardwood is much less forgiving.

If the coating begins peeling or chipping because the wood was not properly prepared, fixing the problem usually means removing the failed coating and starting over. That turns a seemingly inexpensive DIY project into a much more expensive repair.

At the very least, have a professional installer evaluate your floors before making a decision. A reputable installer will be able to provide some insights into your existing floor that you may not have thought of, and can give you advanced warning of problem areas that will cause epoxy not to bond properly.
