Polyaspartic Coatings

Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea coating that is popular within the garage floor coating industry because of the rapid cure times (sometimes within hours). However, this speed comes with important limitations. 

Despite marketing claims, polyaspartic coatings are not more moisture-tolerant than epoxy and should seldomly be used as a base layer directly on concrete since they don't bond as reliably to the substrate. We use polyaspartic as a UV-resistant topcoat over an epoxy base to create a hybrid system that combines epoxy's superior adhesion with polyaspartic's chemical/abrasion resistance to create a tough, long lasting top coat. However, entire garage floors coated only with polyaspartic often underperform because the coating lacks epoxy's foundational bonding strength. While the quick cure appeals to those in a hurry, rushing the process can compromise long-term durability of your garage floor. 

How Much Does a Polyaspartic Coating Cost?

Polyaspartic coatings generally range from $5-$15 per square foot installed, reflecting the premium pricing for speed and the specialized application requirements.

DIY Acrylic Paint and Epoxy Kits

The kits you can buy from big box retailers might advertise as “epoxy,” but they are so watered down that they are more of a glorified house paint. 

These coatings go on easily and dry quickly, making them the most DIY-friendly option, but they form a weaker bond to concrete and offer less chemical and abrasion resistance than epoxy or polyaspartic systems. Expect to recoat every few years as the surface wears from everyday use, especially in high-traffic areas or where tires sit. Think of acrylic paint and other store-bought options as a protective paint layer rather than a true industrial coating.

DIY coating kits from home improvement stores offer the lowest upfront cost (often $200-$800 for materials), but come with significant risks if you lack experience and proper equipment. 

Another challenge outside of the weakened epoxy itself is properly preparing the concrete surface, which determines whether your coating bonds permanently or peels within months. Most homeowners don't own or know how to use diamond grinders to remove surface contaminants and create the rough profile needed for adhesion, nor do they have shot blasters to remove all dust and debris afterward.
