Are you noticing your epoxy floor starting to yellow (or amber)? It is one of the most frustrating things we see when evaluating older epoxy installs. This yellowing can be caused by several factors, such as UV light or poor-quality mixes. Luckily, it can be fixed and installed properly this time around.

## What Causes My Epoxy Floor to Turn Yellow?

The most common causes of yellowing epoxy floors are UV exposure and low-quality coating materials. Understanding what is causing the discoloration will help you determine the best way to restore your floor and prevent the problem from happening again.

### UV Light Exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun is one of the leading causes of epoxy floor yellowing. Over time, exposure to sunlight triggers chemical reactions in the epoxy that change its color, often leaving the surface with a yellow or amber tint.

This is especially common in garages where the floor receives direct sunlight through windows or an open garage door. Even high-quality epoxy can yellow when exposed to UV light because standard epoxy coatings do not provide adequate UV resistance on their own.

### Low-Quality Coating Materials

The quality of the coating materials also plays a role in how well your floor maintains its appearance. Lower-quality epoxy products may be more susceptible to discoloration and premature deterioration, particularly when exposed to sunlight and heat.

Choosing professional-grade materials helps improve the longevity and appearance of your floor. However, even premium epoxy can yellow without proper UV protection in the form of paint chips or sand.

### Improper Installation

In some cases, the problem comes down to how the coating was installed. Incorrect mixing ratios, poor application techniques, and failure to follow manufacturer specifications can affect the coating's appearance and durability.

While improper installation does not always cause yellowing directly, it can contribute to premature coating failure and other surface problems. Proper preparation, quality materials, and correct application are essential for a long-lasting finish.

## How to Prevent Epoxy Floors from Turning Yellow

The best way to prevent UV-related yellowing is to use a pro-grade epoxy topped with a thick broadcast of paint chips ([paint chip epoxy](https://elitefloorcoating.com/paint-chip-epoxy)) or sand ([quartz epoxy](https://elitefloorcoating.com/quartz-epoxy)) and finished with a topcoat of polyaspartic or urethane. Applying epoxy alone is asking for discoloration sooner rather than later.

### Spread Thick Layer of Media

The most important step when trying to avoid UV damage is spreading a thick layer of media over the epoxy base coat. This can be paint chips, sand, or even adding pigmentation (color) to the topcoat to block out the sun.

It is important to install a thick layer of media because throwing some paint chips in the air and watching them fall on the epoxy will not be sufficient. We apply a full layer of paint chips over the epoxy to not only block out the sun, but hold up better to wear and tear. Many store bought kits will only provide enough paint chips to [cover 30-40% of the concrete](https://elitefloorcoating.com/blog/garage-floor-paint-vs-professional-epoxy).

### Apply a Polyaspartic Topcoat

After the media is properly spread, we install a polyaspartic topcoat which seals the paint chips or sand, and acts as a window between the media and your feet. Adding a polyaspartic or urethane topcoat is extremely important, because recoating with epoxy will defeat the purpose of laying the paint chips in the first place.

Since polyaspartic and urethane topcoats are newer (last decade or so), you will find many epoxy floors installed before 2015 turning yellow and needing to be replaced.

While no coating is completely immune to discoloration under every condition, a polyaspartic topcoat over a thick layer of paint chips helps preserve the floor's original color and appearance far better than an epoxy-only application.

### Choose the Right Coating Combination

At Elite Floor Coatings, we install a hybrid epoxy base coat paired with a polyaspartic topcoat. The epoxy base coat provides strong adhesion to [properly prepared concrete](https://elitefloorcoating.com/blog/epoxy-flooring-prep-best-practices) and creates a durable foundation. The polyaspartic topcoat finishes the floor to make it more durable and won’t yellow like straight epoxy would.

This combination delivers the benefits of epoxy while addressing one of its biggest weaknesses: susceptibility to sunlight. Choosing the right materials from the start helps prevent the yellowing and discoloration commonly seen in older epoxy installations.

## How to Fix an Epoxy Floor That Is Already Yellowing

If your epoxy floor has already turned yellow, applying another coat directly over the discolored surface is not always the best solution. The right approach depends on the condition of the existing coating and how deeply the discoloration extends.

### Evaluate the Existing Coating

Start by determining whether the yellowing is limited to the surface or extends deeper into the coating. If the underlying epoxy is still firmly bonded to the concrete and the discoloration is primarily in the exposed top layer, restoring the floor may be possible without removing the entire coating.

However, in many situations the epoxy is already 10+ years old and the material that was used is not high quality, so it makes sense to restore the floor entirely. The cost to try to repair the yellowing is not much different than installing a better quality coating, so most homeowners choose to upgrade their epoxy from the concrete up.

### Grind the Surface and Apply a New Topcoat

When the existing coating is in good condition and the damage is limited to the surface, a professional can mechanically grind the affected layer to remove the discolored material and prepare the floor for recoating.

Once the surface is properly prepared, a fresh layer of paint chips or sand can be broadcast, and a new polyaspartic topcoat can help restore the floor's appearance while providing improved UV resistance. The existing coating must be suitable for recoating, and the new material must be compatible with the remaining layers.

If the yellowing extends through the epoxy base coat, grinding and recoating the surface alone may not resolve the problem. In those cases, removing more of the existing coating and installing a new application may be necessary.

As mentioned above, by the time the old floor gets ground down and repaired, the few additional hours of work is worth having a brand new coating installed rather than trying to salvage the original one.
