Reasons Not to Paint Over an Epoxy Floor

If your existing epoxy floor is chipping, peeling, or you simply want to change the color, painting over it might sound like the easiest option, but it is certainly not the best one.

Before you spend time and money trying to tackle this project yourself, here is why painting over epoxy is not recommended and what you can do instead to change your floor's look.

Can I Paint Over an Epoxy Floor?

The simple answer here is; yes, you can do anything you want to your floor. The real answer though is “no.” There are several reasons why painting over an existing epoxy floor is unlikely to produce the results you want.

Paint Will Not Adhere Properly

Most professionally installed epoxy floors have a protective topcoat designed to resist wear, moisture, chemicals, and everyday use. These coatings create a durable, nonporous surface that most paints cannot bond to effectively.

Polyaspartic topcoats are particularly difficult to paint over without proper preparation. Applying paint directly to this surface does not create the bond needed for a durable finish. Even if the paint initially looks good, foot traffic, vehicle tires, and regular cleaning can cause it to peel or chip.

When we say “paint” we are also referring to store bought acrylic and epoxy kits. They simply won’t stick.

Proper Surface Preparation Is Difficult

Getting a new coating to adhere requires more than cleaning the floor and applying a fresh layer of paint. The existing surface needs to be prepared so the new material can bond properly.

This typically involves specialized grinding equipment to remove or roughen the existing coating. Depending on the condition of the floor and the type of coating already installed, additional preparation and a compatible primer may also be necessary.

Most homeowners do not have access to the equipment needed to prepare an epoxy floor correctly. Skipping this step or using the wrong preparation method increases the likelihood of coating failure.

Painting Can Create a Bigger Mess

Painting over epoxy might seem like a simple weekend project, but poor adhesion can quickly turn it into a much bigger job. Paint that peels or chips will leave the floor looking uneven and worn. Fixing the problem may require removing the failed paint and preparing the original coating all over again.

You could end up spending more time and money correcting the finish than you would have spent having the floor professionally recoated in the first place.

How to Change the Color of an Epoxy Floor

If you are unhappy with your epoxy floor's current color, you do not necessarily need to remove the entire coating and start from scratch. A professional floor coating contractor can evaluate the existing finish and determine the best way to change its appearance.

Remove or Prepare the Existing Topcoat

If the existing coating is still in good condition, a contractor may be able to remove or abrade the top layer and apply a new topcoat in your preferred color. The exact process depends on the existing coating, its condition, and the materials being used for the new finish.

In some cases, the topcoat can be mechanically removed or prepared without disturbing the underlying epoxy base. The contractor can then apply a compatible new coating to achieve the updated appearance.

Grind the Floor and Apply a New Coating

If the existing coating is damaged, peeling, or incompatible with the desired finish, more extensive preparation may be necessary. A contractor may need to grind away some or all of the existing coating before applying a suitable primer and new coating.

Grinding helps create a properly prepared surface for the new material to bond to. The contractor can then apply a new coating in the color and finish you want.

In most of our cases, homeowners choose to install a new epoxy coating entirely, because by the time we bring in all the equipment and manpower to grind down the old epoxy, we might as well take the whole thing off and install a new one with better materials so it lasts longer. It is worth it for the extra few hundred dollars.
